Magazine

Art Guide Australia is a print and online magazine exploring contemporary Australian art. Our editors and our team of writers and contributors know the local art scene and keep you informed through engaging and thoughtful articles. We speak with artists, curators and gallerists to learn more about their ideas and share them with an audience who want to know more about Australian art and what to see. We’re here to support a vibrant and diverse arts community and our aim is to provide independent, considered editorial coverage alongside a comprehensive picture of what’s happening in the visual arts across Australia.

First Nations in Focus • The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has partnered with the Biennale of Sydney to commission 15 First Nations artists to create new work for a program of First Nations resurgence, deep-felt time, and illuminating ecological thought and connection—led by First Nations curatorial fellow Bruce Johnson McLean, a Wierdi man of the Birri Gubba Nation. Art Guide Australia spoke to participating artists Tania Willard, Angélica Serech, and duo John Harvey & Walter Waia.

Voices in the Mist • Following an early life dominated by upheaval, Eritrean artist Nahom Teklehaimanot has developed a practice using unique materials and methods, to give voice to those unable to speak.

BURDENS OF PROOF • A landmark photographic series by Helen Grace on show as part of the 25th Biennale of Sydney reflects a turning point in a longstanding feminist struggle—while speaking to how the faultlines of the past play out in the present day.

When Bones Speak • In a vast former power station on Sydney Harbour, Cannupa Hanska Luger summons the dingo’s call. His new sculptural sound work at the 25th Biennale of Sydney listens for survival across species, ancestry and land.

Nature Nurture • Connecting objects from a university’s collections with contemporary works, a new exhibition explores possibilities for co-existence through the lens of three symbolic natural protagonists.

20 QUESTIONS WITH Marise Maas

In the Fold • To coincide with The Offbeat Sari, an exhibition that celebrates modern interpretations of the sari travelling for the first time to Australia, the writer Megha Kapoor meditates on the shapeshifting power of this ancient garment—and the source of its enduring appeal.

A Bridge Over Troubled Waters • An intergenerational exhibition reflects on the contested building of a bridge to Kumarangk (Hindmarsh Island), and pays tribute to the Ngarrindjeri women who fought to protect and sustain their culture.
