When firefighter Randy Bogart perishes in the arson fire at an abandoned brewery known as the Brewmaster’s Widow, Death Bogart and his girlfriend Wren Morgan travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to find closure. They discover that Randy left his badge behind at the firehouse before going to the brewery. But the coroner finds another badge on Randy’s body, leaving Death and Wren with more questions than answers.

Desperate to know what really happened, Death and Wren begin to investigate. Their digging leads to a connection between Randy’s death and the mysterious Cherokee Caves once used by nineteenth-century beer barons. But the Brewmaster’s Widow is jealous of her secrets. Prying them loose could cost Death and Wren their lives.

Ross’s lively second Auction Block mystery (after 2015’s Death and the Redheaded Woman) takes PI Death (pronounced “Deeth”) Bogart and his auctioneer girlfriend, Wren Morgan, to St. Louis to look into the death of Death’s firefighter brother, Randy, who succumbed to an aneurysm while battling an arson blaze at the abandoned brewery known as the Brewmaster’s Widow, which closed at the onset of Prohibition in 1920. That Randy was found wearing a hat with the wrong badge number suggests something is amiss. Death and Wren’s search for answers leads to wealthy Einstadt Brewery heir Andrew Grey and his trophy wife, Alaina, whose physician brother is monitoring Grey’s home care since he suffered a stroke some months earlier. The preposterous becomes believable as more information comes to light, and Death and Wren realize that they must attempt a daring rescue before it’s too late. Readers will look forward to their further adventures. Agent: Janet Reid, FinePrint Literary Management.
